We offer two certification training path:

Red X Problem Solving: Apprentice (3 Days)

Students learn strategies and techniques for finding the hidden causes that are keeping their systems from performing properly. Students will learn to assess the effectiveness of a measurement system based upon its intended use. Ideal projects for this level, end of line test fails, scrap, re-work, yield and first-time throughput. They also learn to confirm the Red X and establish a tolerance that ensures customer needs are met. Finally, students learn to apply solutions, document savings and leverage the profound knowledge gained by revealing unknown relationships.

Course Objectives:

  • Learn Red X problem solving principles and concepts.
  • Develop Feature and Property strategies.
  • Solve Feature and Property problems using Multi-Vari, scatter plots and Group Comparisons.
  • Conduct measurement system analysis using Isoplot® and Stage 0.
  • Solve measurement system problems.
  • Develop Defect strategies.
  • Solve Defect problems using Concentration Diagrams.
  • Develop Malfunction Event strategies.
  • Solve Malfunction Event problems using Component Search™ and Paired Comparisons™.
  • Confirm the Red X with confirmation tests and demonstrated system improvement.
  • Finish projects by establishing tolerances, applying solutions, tracking benefits and leveraging results.

Red X Problem Solving: Product Performance (3 Days)

Students will learn the steps in the Shainin FACTUAL process and how to apply it to engineering problems that surface during development, production trials and initial launch where smaller sample sizes are typical. They will learn to assess the effectiveness of a measurement system based upon its intended use. Along with learning strategies to quickly and efficiently go from a Green Y event to the Red X component, and then converge on the Red X feature or property. Students will learn to confirm the Red X and establish a tolerance that ensures customer needs are met. A special emphasis will be placed on strategies to deal with difficult malfunction failures as well as destructive event failures.

Ideal projects would involve product performance, durability and reliability and conforming to regulatory requirements. Finally, students learn to apply solutions, document savings and leverage the profound knowledge gained by revealing unknown relationships.

Course Objectives:

  • Learn Red X problem solving principles and concepts.
  • Conduct measurement system analysis using Isoplot® and Stage 0.
  • Solve measurement system problems.
  • Develop Malfunction and Destructive Event strategies.
  • Solve Malfunction Event problems using Component Search™ and Paired
  • Solve Destructive Event problems using Concentration Diagrams, Event to Energy Transform and Multi-Vari.
  • Confirm the Red X with a statistical confirmation test and demonstrated system improvement.
  • Finish projects by establishing tolerances using Tolerance Parallelogram, applying solutions, tracking benefits and leveraging results.

Red X Problem Solving: Journeyman (4 Days)

Class covers advanced problem-solving tools and strategies in the Approach and Converge phases of FACTUAL™, confirmation testing in the Test and Apply phases of FACTUAL and establishing tolerances in the Understand phase of FACTUAL.

Course Objectives:

  • Apply advanced tools for Feature, Property, Defect and Malfunction Event problems.
  • Isolate the operations containing the Red X using Operations Search™, Active Multi-Vari or Active Concentration Diagram.
  • Develop Destructive Event strategies.
  • Solve Destructive Event problems using event to energy transform and energy accounting.
  • Plan and execute statistically designed single factor experiments.
  • Establish a realistic tolerance on a product feature or process parameter.
  • Understand when to use full factorial experiments.
  • Plan and execute statistically designed full factorial experiments.
  • Analyze the results from statistically designed full factorial experiments.
  • Establish realistic tolerances on two product features or two process parameters simultaneously.
  • Test proposed solutions before implementation to ensure improved system performance.
  • Track the development of innovative solutions with a Corrective Action Tree.
  • Plan and execute solutions and leverage results.

Prerequisites: Attend the Red X Problem Solving: Apprentice class.

Red X Problem Solving: Reliability (2 Days)

Students learn advanced strategies and tools for solving reliability problems which occur during customer usage. It picks up where the Product Performance Class left off and starts with an understanding of the different patterns of failure described in the bathtub curve. A key theme of the class is being able to establish a problem-solving strategy for when the problem lives in variation in the product’s resistance to a particular failure mode (strength), a spike in application energy, or environmental decay weakening the strength over time.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand how to use the Bathtub curve to identify infant mortality, accidental or wear out failure patterns.
  • Apply Red X Reliability strategies (aggravation strategies, system failure strategies).
  • Address No Trouble Found (NTF) by understanding the six causes of warranty NTF.
  • Learn accelerated testing techniques for both malfunction and destructive events.
  • Understand fatigue failures including low cycle and high cycle failures and the factors that influence fatigue life.
  • Apply Chain of Events diagrams to field reliability problems.

Prerequisites: Attendance of Red X Product Performance Class, or the Red X Apprentice class.

Red X Problem Solving: Master (3 Days)

Coaching requires skills beyond problem solving. A coach must become reflectively competent. Students develop a deeper understanding of both the application of advanced problem-solving tools and strategies as well as the skills needed to coach and develop other problem solvers.

Course Objectives:

  • Develop strategies for extremely challenging projects.
  • Understand advanced concepts for active Multi-Vari and Active Concentration Diagrams.
  • Apply Energy Accounting to Malfunction and Destructive Events.
  • Learn to enhance measurement systems to reveal additional contrasts.
  • Understand the statistical principles underlying key Red X strategies and tools.
  • Develop soft skills necessary to coach and develop others.
  • Develop a personal action plan to improve as a problem solver and coach.

Prerequisites: Certification as a Red X Journeyman or Red X Reliability Engineer, three Master candidate projects completed, and the Master Toolbox completed.
